Energy
LWV SJSC may advocate using this position
Energy Position Goals and Objectives
Support the adoption by local govenrment of an Energy Policy which stresses conservation and encourages local commerce and industry to establish and implement similar policies.
1. Local government should play a leading role in coping with the energy problem. This leadership can be demonstrated primarily by the adoption of an energy policy.
2. The energy policy itself must be comprehensive and yet specific enough to provide for:
A. The development of a conservation ethic
B. Tax incentives for energy conservation improvements
C. The establishment of the necessary codes, standards, ordinances, zonings and land use patterns which have as their goals the conservation of energy and the promotion of alternative energy sources.
D. The education of the public regarding energy conservation and the dissemination of information about alternative energy sources and energy conservation.
3. Local commerce and industry should help alleviate the energy problem. This should be approached through the establishment of an energy policy which has energy conservation as its focal point. Local commerce and industry should be encouraged to:
A. Establish and implement their own energy conservation policies.
B. Share their conservation ideas and suggestions with others(e.g., other businesses, local government, the citizen). These ideas might include carpooling, vanpooling, employee busing, recycling.
4. The LWV San Jose/Santa Clara should:
A. Educate the public on energy and energy conservation.
B. Monitor energy activities of government and business.
