Lunch with Roberta Lynch

Roberta Lynch

Study groups are hard at work at both the local and national level working on the issue of Immigration. Our September Lunch with League speaker, Roberta Lynch, will address the issue: The Impact of Immigration on Education

Roberta, born in Buffalo, New York and raised in Massachusetts, has lived in California since the age of 10 with extended stays in other parts of the world. She became interested in teaching when she served as a Peace Corps Volunteer for two years in Niger, West Africa. She taught English as a Foreign Language in a small village secondary school. After completing her service she returned to the U.S. and earned her Master's Degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Teachers College, Columbia University. This led to a 12-year residence in New York City where she worked at various community colleges and as an ESL and Remedial Writing Computer Lab Coordinator at Baruch College. While in New York Roberta met and worked with people from Haiti, the Dominican Republic, China, Vietnam and other parts of the globe.

In 1995, Roberta returned to California. She taught ESL for 9 years at San Jose High and two years ago transferred to Prospect High School in Saratoga. In 2000 she was named Teacher of the Year at San Jose High for helping one of her students get surgery to correct some damage from the polio he had suffered as an infant.

Won't you join us to hear a first hand account of how immigration and education impact each other.
